When my fuel light only came on about the time that the bike would take 4gal or more to fill up. Or like 180miles on that full tank of gas. Make sure you are actually low on fuel before you rip that gauge cluster apart!

The light comes on with .78 gallons left in the tank.

Yeah before you take the gauge out just short the two wires on the low level switch together with the bike on and see if the light comes on. Or just short the wire that is not green to ground.

I agree; test before pulling apart. I think I got 190 miles before I saw the low fuel light for the first time. I put in just about 4.0 gallons to fill at 197 miles.

we drained the tank yesterday and it still wouldnt work so we pulled a few things apart and did some tests

turns out it was the fuel reserve sensor that needs to be replaced it is broken

it is really really simple to fix its just a matter of unscrewing the part and putting the new one in

now i just gotta find one

thanks a lot for your help guys

If I jump the two wires that go into the sensor my fuel light will not go on. But i know the light is good because it flickers on when i start the bike. What's the right way to test the sensor?

If you're sure the bulb is good and it flickers than you have a loose connection. Bad ground probably. The right way to check the switch would be with an empty tank, measure the resistance between the two terminals. It should be a direct connection, (very low resistance).

we tested the light and it came on

when we pulled the sensor put we werent getting continuity through it and the sensor had come off from the holder thing

just for kicks we pulled the sensor apart and one of the sodder joints had come undone

Glad you finally found the culprit. Its kind of interesting that a little light bulb lasted longer than a soldered joint!
