I think my gauge cluster blew

Default I think my gauge cluster blew

I was riding the other day and the gauges started to get a brown film on the lenses. I pull over and stop and it smells like it was burning. I turn the key back on and then nothing theres no lights or anything. All the fuses are fine and wires are good so maybe something shorted out inside of it? My buddy also has a f4 so were going to try just swapping the clusters later on tonight to see if that was the problem. If anyone has any input on this I would greatly appreciate it.

ok so my buddy doesn't want to risk it and is afraid it might blow his gauge cluster too and suggestions

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about your gauge cluster.

Perhaps the internal wiring to the gauge cluster itself was faulty from improper installation, unusual wear, or previous unknown damage. Check all wiring connections to the cluster. Have you noticed any other electrical problems? Also, check connections along your wiring harness for anything else unusual. Be sure to check your fuses for proper amp & replace if necessary.

If you find no wiring probs indicative of failure, then you're left assuming the unit itself was problematic & faulty. I'd recommend for simplicity & ease of installation, replacing w/ another F4 analog gauge unit. While good used F4 parts are getting harder & harder to find, they are still out there. Obviously, your replacement unit won't have indicated mileage accurate to the bike...so you'll have to keep track (a odometer statement will be required by the dmv when you sell it).

If no F4 analog units are to be found, you can do an F4i gauge conversion but this will require more work & retrofitting will be necessary.

Ironically, I have a "spot" on my speedometer that appeared several yrs ago. Its had no negative effect on my speedo (other than appearance) & has remained the same for yrs. At the time, I searched for a cause but found nothing. I've always attributed the cause to an extended period of exposure to direct sunlight. I suppose another underlying cause could be possible but wasn't found. As long as it continues to work properly though, I have no intention of replacing it.

All the connections and fuses are good. Mine has a spot like that except its alot bigger about the size of a half dollar along with the brown burnt film on the lens. I guess I'm in the market for a new cluster then any idea where to get a good working one.

There's always eb*y. There's actually a few on there now.

Motorcycle salvage yards.

Lastly, genuine Honda part replacement - very expensive but they have it.

Hope you're up & running asap.

Thanks now there isn't anything else I would have to do right just plug and play but get the dmv statement of course

Yep, plug & play.

DMV will require an *affidavit* (signed statement) when you sell your bike, that states/documents actual mileage. DMV should be able to provide you w/ the form. Should not be complicated. However, keep your receipt for your 'new' gauge cluster, just in case. Make sure to document the mileage of the 'new' cluster on the receipt to keep track.

Have a cluster with about 15k on the odo. take the back plate off yours and put it on this one and you'd have a mint cluster mang
