This is a good question. It does depend on upkeep, I think that depends on any model but some bikes may be prone to issues I guess as some cars. I have had 3 bikes and are picking up a 4th and have found all have lasted without any major issues with proper upkeep.

I use wd40 to clean the chain. However, I apply a proper chain lube after cleaning. If you can't make it to a bike shop, walmart usually carries BelRay brand chain lube. Auto supply stores usually do as well.
