Default How do i check timing?

I did a search, but only saw my other post where I mentioned timing. Sorry if i sound dumb. I can do it with a car, but never done with my bike. I guess I can follow where the spark plug wires go.

My bike runs bad between 4-5.5k rpm. I wonder if there is a vacuum advance or centrifical advance or is it electronic advance, cuz maybe one of those isn't working

The best way I have figured out how to do that is drive it to my local shop, give them the keys and my visa, and say fix it! LOL That always seems to work for me.............[X(][8D]

I hope i don't have a serious problem, but when i changed the plugs i remember all of them having fresh oil on them. I just figured they were fouled so there was oil accumulating in the cylinders cuz the plugs weren't firing good enough. But now I wonder if my rings are so bad that oil is causing the spark plugs to not fire correctly. I read a post where someong had too much oil, but i didn't add oil. Unless it has always had too much, but I don't think so. What other reason would I have oil in the cylinders?

Timing is not going to cause oil to foul the plugs. The only reason to get oil on the plugs is oil ring on the piston leaking a bit. To check the timing you remove the valve cover and check the alignment of the marks on the cam sprockets with a set of pistons at TDC. A shop manual will have detailed instructions. It's not that difficult to check just time consuming. A shop will charge you $400+.

So if all plugs had oil, than all rings must be leaky, man that would suck. Nothing to do about that but get an overhaul on engine, unless there is a way to create a better seal on rings.

How many miles on that engine and how much oil are you getting on the plugs? If you're not having to top it off between oil changes then you can let it go for a while.
