Headlight issue, 2000 F4
I noticed last fall that my headlight wasn't working. This spring, I put a new battery in and fired up my bike and noticed it was working. I took it out the other day, and everything seemed fine. I was going to ride it at night and I noticed it was off again.
I took apart the headlight/turn signal switch and cleaned the contacts with some contact cleaner. I tried 2 know working bulbs, and swapped fuses and I couldn't get the light to turn on. The high beam indicator on the instrument cluster is not lit either. Does anyone know what it might be? I thinking:
1) Bad headlight switch
2) Starter relay switch <- what I suspect
3) Bad wire <- doubt it
4) Bad ignition start button
I do have a service manual and a voltmeter.
I could have sworn that last year, I was at least getting the high beam indicator light, now I have nothing. Any help guys/girls? I'm dying to ride...
UPDATE: I took some wire and went straight from the battery to the harness where the bulb plugs into and it lit up. I guess that proves that the bulb is good. When I touched the positive wire to the high beam side of the bulb, the high beam indicator on the instrument clused did light up. Any ideas?

do you know how long i've been trying to find a solution for this...!!! i have a 2000 f4 as well....one day, my lights stopped working. bulbs are good, battery is fine, and fuses work. i hardwired from the wireharness to the fuse and it works perfect! however, i have no high beam....
i thought, since i was bypassing the relay, the relay was a problem....but if you buy an electrical part, you can't return it.
i realize i didn't offer any help....but if you find out what the problem is please share....i plan on tackling this issue soon...riding at night with no high beam is no fun!

My '99 was having a similar issue, turned out to be a contact in the control switch. When I pushed the start button, sometimes the headlight would work, sometimes not. If I slightly tapped the start button it would tur back on. I was told it was a contact, and they re-tacked it, but still having the same issue. I just ordered a new control switch. Might not be much help, but I'm guessing it's a common problem than we all think.
