F4 Barely starts and runs
Hey guys, I wrecked my 2000 F4 back in november. The only damage to the engine was that the clutch cover was torn up, all the way through. I just got around to buying and putting on a new one, I changed the oil and coolant and spark plugs. I started the bike, it took a long time to start(a few minutes). I assumed it was because it hadnt been ran in awhile and thought it would run good as soon as it started. I was wrong, it started up but was making a loud ticking noise from what sounded like the head. On top of that as soon as I touched the throttle the engine would stumble and die.
I will try to get a video up soon.
The engine doesn't make the ticking noise when I try to start it, but I figured I would check the timing anyway. I pulled off the valve cover and the timing appears to be correct. BUT I did find a couple of very small metal pieces in the head, they look like they might be from the old clutch cover.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
Or anyone know how i should go about making sure there are no metal pieces in my engine?

the last thing you want is metal in yor hd. what i think i would do is go and buy
atight nit strainer and change your oil evry 300 miles for about 2000 miles but use that strainer so you can keep using the same oil and see if your getting anything in there, god knows its expensive s#@! and maybe change that filter a couple of times inbetween that
i think i would rather be more cautious doing that to make sure theres no metal in there
also take that valve cover off a couple more times make sure no metal

pull the right side engine cover off and examine the chain and chain tensioner. perhaps the tensioner crapped out and your chain is jumping all over the place on the sprockets. a friend of mine had this problem a while back on his f3...essentially an identical motor. you can even run it with the valve cover off for a little(not so much the side cover due to the crank trigger...it won't start without it in place but you can always crank it to see)...it'll make a mess but you'll be able to see what's going on a little better.

Ok I pulled the gas tank, emptied it, took apart the carbs and cleaned them, dropped the oil pan and cleaned that out (no metal pieces), cleaned the oil pickup screen, put on a new fuel filter, new oil filter, it seems to run fine but it is still making alot of noise from the head.

if the plug wires were out of order the bike would run like absolute crap...only 2 cylinders or not at all.
check the CCTL...cam chain tensioner lifter. I assume you know where it is. That or the lifters are junk but i wouldn't think so because I'm pretty sure they aren't hydraulic lifters...almost 100% it's the cctl.
