The F does not stand for FOUR, or anything like that. The F is a designation that honda assigned to the bike. The first CBR F1 was designed to meet the wants of the average street rider and those that want to open it up on the weekends at the racetrack. Honda wanted to find that perfect blend of trackbike and streetbike. The CBR for some years was the perfect match for both type of riders until
Yamaha in the late 90's came out with three different bikes, the R6 streetbike, R6 supersport, and the R6 sporttourer. Three different bikes for three different types of riders while honda only had one bike and the was the F4. To compete with Yamaha honda revamped the F4 and came out with the F4I which had better handling, fuel injection, and internals mods. For these reasons the new F41 is no longer honda's choice for a race ready bike and the 600RR was introduce some time ago. Honda saw that poeple wanted a bike that was built for the track and they gave it to the people. Hope this history lesson clears everything up.

CB is the engine designation of an inline 4, R was added later when they started to produce a race replica for the mass marketand the technologies learned from the race tracks, hence CBR the "F"came from I believe the F1 racing back in the day, F-4 means 4th generation of the F series, F4i is 4th gen with Fuel injection hence the "i"

look here

The F stands for 4 cylinder as there were models with the SAME DISPLACEMENT but some were twins and some were 4's.

CB was used in the early 60's to designate the low pipe street models. Like an example, the old Super Hawk was a CB305, the off road/street high pipeversions were called CL, like the Scrambler was called a CL305, then there wasthe Dream, which was a CA305. They kept the CB, CL thing going and added the F when there was a change like the old CB/CL 350 twin was then teamed with the 350/4cyl. called a 350F in 1972. The CB 750, CB500/CB550 became known as the CB 750F or the CB550F when they became sport bikes doing away with the 4 mufflers and going to the one muffler, plus a change of engine parts, handlebars, etc. It appears as if the "F" seems to stand for what they used to call the Super Sport versions. This is only an observation. Your's may vary.
