Carb Problems. Got me Stumped. Help Please!
Hello riders,
I'm having problems with my 99 F4. It's a project I'm working on currently. The problem I'm having is that when I start it, she will run for a short time. During this process, she will run, then after a some time, she will not idle out during this. Here's where it gets tricky, it will start to fall dead if I don't throttle slightly, to much and it dies. When it does die either it start back up, or it just turn over. (smell excess fuel from exhaust). Cleaned carbs, but never dis-assembled completely. Can someone give a p.o.v.(Point of View.)
Thanks, Katt

hey katt. need more info to help. did u pull jets and clean. what did u use to clean if u did. are u using the choke to start. did u mess with the floats. etc. be specific from start to finish if u can
I used CDC Carb cleaner. I pulled the floaters out along with the black rubber suction along with the needles on all four. Cleaned those parts. I also addded some seafoam into the tank & gas line. I haven't disassembled the carbs completely yet. If that is case, how will I sync the carbs afterwards? The carbs are hard to remove from headers. I had someone to assist me in this, but we together couldn't remove them. What would be the best type of carb cleaner to us?
mjp94 , I started by cleaning the floats, having a hard time removing the carbs from the heads. Is there a thread on how to completely disassembling the carbs? If so, is there a thread that will guide me the steps of cleaning & reassembling, then on how to sync the carbs? If there is, can someone give the thread link?

Search, and you shall find.

Carbs might not be exactly the same, but the principle applies across the board.
You may not have to sync your carbs afterwards. I didn't have to make any adjustment after I cleaned the ton of crud that was in my carbs.

its not nec to resync carbs unless you seperate the carbs from the bank. the floats on the carbs are not adjustable, so unless you have crud in the seats, thats not the issue. you must pull out the jets, soak and clean them til you can see thru them. dont use anything metal to clean out the jet holes since they're brass and deform easily. use a nylon fishing line. to me it sounds more like the pilot jets are clogged. the holes are very very small and clog easily. u also need compressed air to pressure clean all the tiny holes butterfly side, and all jet holes. if you're not experienced i suggest having someone help you in person. its difficult to troubleshoot on the forum but is possible with the correct info. the carb cleaning 101 doesnt show any cleaning at all if i remember correctly, but is a great write up w/pix. i used a crow bar wrapped in a t shirt to pop mine off. its more difficult lining them back up on reassembly. jmo

Katt you're having the exact same issues I've been dealing with. Only thing is I get those issues after a hard day of riding through traffic and it normally happens after I turn off the bike and restart it. Any luck on cleaning the carbs and pilot jets yet? I just resynced my carbs and I wonder if I have to resync them again later after I clean them?
