Default what size and brand rear tire?

im looking to get a new rear tire for my 97 f3. it has a dunlop sport max 160/60/17 on it now. i called a local shop and he said he could sell me a used michelin that was used for racing but still had good tread for $100? is that a good price? i was also looking at a michelin macadam that is a 170/60/17. will that fit? does it make a difference if front tire is not same brand as rear tire? or should i keep em the same? thanks for your help!

100 is a little high for a used tire, you can get a brand new one for 130 michelin pilot power 170/60/17, also yes you can fit a 170 on you stock wheel. as far as mixing and matching brands i wouldn't, I would just replace both with a new brand, or stick with the same brand and just replace the rear. Just my .02

on both f3's i had i ran pilot powers. i used 170 an dloved them. i even had a 180 on there and it was fine. you can mix and match brands hell even the pro racers do it. it wont hurt but find what works best for the type of riding you do. and yea 100 for a used race tire is a bad deal. not just because a brand new is a lil bit more but a race tire will need higher temps to be effectice and require a constant high heat. for normal around town traffic you will not get that and you will lose the grip an dthe tire will start to shed from being hot then cold and not running @ the proper temp.

i too was kinda curious about the sizing of the tires, and what and hwo much it effects things, i have a 170, heard the 160 will make it turn better...as far as that 100 used track tire tell that guy to go blow himself because he either got it for free or paid 1 dollar for it, i know a bunch of stunt guy's that go and pick up used track tires from the track and they say 1.50 is expensive for one of those tires....the track guy's use their tires for one race, sometimes even just one lap wear the sides out real good but the center is full of tread....great for a commuter

Havoc,Just curious what pro racers you're watching. I've been involved in racing for a long time and have never, ever seen some one mix and match brands. Its a bad idea because of the difference in profile (shape of the tire, the front is designed to work best with a certain shape rear). If you're just knocking about on the street it wont really matter, but it will effect your handling for the worse.

$100 for a used race tire is a bit high. I can buy nice low time takeoffs on Ebay for $100 A SET. Havoc is right that race tires will not reach their ideal temperature, and wont last long at all. Best to pony up for tires apporpriate to what kind of riding you'll do.

IF and only if$100 is the mounted price for a ride in (not carry in the wheel) thats not bad....mount and balance with teh wheel on the bike can run $70 a wheel (or more if your delaer likes to gouge)

ridenow.com has shinko's for like $130 a SET.

Now if his price is just the tire thats WAY to much. $100 for a used pair of race tires that are in decent shapemaybe...for just a rear thats pricey.

no need for a race tire you can get a new street for around the same price you might throw in 30 bucks n get a new tired mounted at some shops when u buy the tire from them shop around .

i changed out my tires i run michelin pilot powers i read the reviews there good to go . i took off my wheels took them to a shop they charged 15 bucks per wheel with balance . then i mounted them back on myself its not hard plus i like that i did it myself gave my chain a good cleanin n flushed n cleaned my brakes
