tachometer problems
The tach on my wifes f3 has not worked since we bought it but I havent worried to much about it because shell never push it hard enough to hurt anything. Well I have ironed out pretty much all my priority problems so now its time to fix her tach. I thought maybe it was a bad gauge so I bought a nee gauge and installed it and no luck. Everything else on the gauge cluster works perfectly so I knoe its not the cluster. So here I am, I need any help or advise. Please.
Ps. Its a 97 f3

The Tachometer gets its signaling from the ICM. It's a Yellow/Green wire. It's possible that you got a bad connection on the back of the cluster, however if you replaced the Tach, well then that pretty much rules that out. Check the connector on the ICM (right had side of bike), maybe unplug and plug back in. To check the signaling, you'll need a meter that has Peak Voltage capability because the pulses are of short duration.

I checked all the connections and everything is solid and I still have no tach. Im not sure about how to go about chacing down the wife from the cluster back aside from unwrapping all the insulation off and I dont want to go thru all that headache. Please any help or advise is greatly appreciated.
Before unwrapping the insulation or tape, I'd do a simple continuity check. You'll need a meter to do this. From the Yellow/Green wire on the ICM connector to the terminal/screw on the back of the gauge cluster. If you don't have a copy of the shop manual for the F3, you really should get it. There are links in this section if you do a search so that you can download a digital copy. The procedure for checking continuity is fairly simple. An inexpensive meter will work fine for this check. Walmart has them in the automotive section for less than $20.
