Default Suddenly No Electrical Power

OK It's been a long time since I posted since my bike has been running great. I did a quick search and couldn't find what I was looking for, so here goes.

I have a 97 CBR 600 F3 that I bought used a couple of years ago. Haven't had to do anything to it except tune it up and enjoy it. It sat most of last winter in a heated garage on stands. I started it up 2 days ago and let it warm up. It was a little reluctant to fire since it had been sitting so long, so I had to crank the starter more than I usually do. The battery has been on a Battery Tender over the winter and is reading fully charged (according to the charger). When I cranked it to start it, there was no indication of the battery dying.

Today I took it off the stands and pushed it outside in preparation for a little ride. It fired right up, then died withing about 5 seconds. At that point I noticed there was no electrical power to the bike anywhere. No starter, no lights, no horn, nothing. I pluged my Battery Tender back in and it showed the battery as being 80% charged. (steady red light w/ flashing green)

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to electrical issues so I'm not sure exactly where to start looking. I checked the fuses and they're all OK. Is it possible I could have ashorted cell in my battery?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can give.

Do you have a multi meter because you're going to need one. But a really easy thing would be to check all your fuses. There is also a fuse that is located under the seat. Follow the positive terminal from the battery and you'll see it under a rubber cap.

Your battery might have died...Do you get any lights with the battery tender on the bike??

Thanks guys. The battery terminals are tight and I don't get any power even with the charger connected. It has been suggested that the main fuse is blown. I wasn't aware of the main fuse, so I'll check it tomorrow when I get home from work.

If that doesn't fix it, check the wire harness connections throughout the bike. I had the same problem and after days of searching, I found a broken wire that was causing the problem. I fixed it and it worked just fine.

Well, I finally got some time to check this out. I don't have a wireing diagram for this bike, so I'm kinda flying blind.

I have 12.6 volts at the battery and at the incomming side of the main fuse. The fuse tests fine, but I have no power on the other side of it. That's on the black lump with the red plug (4 prong) in it. I uploaded a picture, so I hope it shows up.

Any additional help will sure be appreciated. It's finally getting nice here in Cincinnati and I'm itching to ride.

That is your starter relay switch. The way it works is the power comes in from one side and then continues on through out the rest of the bike with the key in the on position. When you hit the starter button, it directs all the power to the starter motor. That is why you see the headlight go out when you start the bike. I've put in a like for a download of Honda F3 Repair Manual in PDF format. It's not as nice as having the book in front of you but it's better than nothing. It'll tell you how to test the relay. It's in section 17 I believe.

I have a 1996 Honda CBR600 F3 and I was riding it the other day and it just died on me going down the road. I thought this was kind of odd because when i went to start it again the battery acted like it was dead and i couldn't roll start it either. I jumped it off a friends bike and it started right up and i took off down the road to get it home and it died on me again. It would run for a min like it was running off the battery then the guages would start jumping, the lights would dim and it would die again. I got it home and i thought that my stator went out so i got a new stator and put it in and there are 3 yellow wires coming out of the stator, i hooked them up and got them to where i thought was right and i rode it for a few hours that day after i put the battery on the charger and it ran fine where as before i would charge the battery it woudl run for abotu 30 min and die when the battery died. I rode the bike all day almost with no problems then i was coming to a stop sign and died again and wouldn't start. It would turn over quickly but wouldn't start. the battery died again and i went home and charged it again and went and had it tested and it tested out fine. once again the bike will start fine when jumped off another bike. I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas as to what might be going on. would it be my regulator/rectifier, or would my wires coming from my stator be hooked up wrong, and if so does anyone know how to test the order or know the order in which they go. I am completly stumped on this one. I have no idea what could be going wrong with it. I charged teh battery today and put it on when i hit the started button the lights dim and it doesn't even try to turn over but when jumped it will start but if i was to hit the started button again to see if it will spin the started it dies instantly, same if i turn on the turn signal, it will just die instantly.. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, i would love to get this thing running soon so i can go ride since its getting nice outside!

Michael

Michael,

Do you have a multimeter? If not, you might want to run to Radio Shack or something like that and buy one. It's about $25 for one that will do everything you need to do (volt reading, ohm reading, and continuity testing). With the battery having a full charge, take the meter and get a reading with the bike at an idle. This reading should pretty much be the voltage of the battery. Next, rev the engine up to 5K rpm and take a reading while the engine speed is at 5k rpm. The reading should be from 13 V to 15 V. If your not in that range, let us know. One more thing, how old is the battery? You could have a bad cell and when you test it, it'll have 12 volts. But when the battery is under a load, it looses it's charge quickly. You'll need to know the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) of the battery which is 120.
