Default Speedo reads half speed??

Picked up a 97 cbr 600 over the winter as a project and after I put it on the road I noticed speedo didn't work. Thinking previous owner may have disconected I checked connections and all was good. After takeing it up to hiway speeds I noticed it seems to read about half of actual speed.I am a powersports mechanic but our shop doesn't do bikes so Im in need of guidance. Odometer appears to run based on actual speed not indicated.
The bike has been put down on the left hard enough to bend the steering stop. I don't know if these instruments take shock all that well.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is it electronic or analog?

(I guess I really mean is it still the stock unit or did the previous owner change anything)

A 97 is electronic, with the pickup above the trans. I would check the wiring from the sensor in the crankcase all the way to the gauges. Don't just check continuity, check the resistance and make sure it makes sense. I'm not sure what kind of signal the sensor puts out, but I lean towards some kind of pulse. There is really only three things to check the sensor, the wiring, and the gauge cluster.

+1.

Has to be sensor, wire, or cluster. If you think thatthe odometer is reading correctly, then it has to be the cluster as the odometer and speedometer get their information from the same sensor/wiring.

I assume that you are in the US and want it to read MPH?

I would second the 2nd. Analog gauges will take quite a beating. Most likely the sensor or like they said above, check all of your wiring from the sensor to the gauges. My bet would be either a wire is kinkied/broken or the sensor is knocked up.

I will check the wiring once more. I did have all the fairings of as well as front fairing stay, so most of the wiring has been in front of me with no obvious flaws. Whenever wiring is covered there can be unseen problems I know.
Anyone know of a downloadable service manual? I found one for my 94 1000 a couple years ago but can't find the site.

Thank you for the help, and yes Im in the States(Wi.) so MPH is my choice.

check stephygee.com for a manual

IF the odometer is correct, but the speedo is wrong, then the gauge set is boned.
