Sliders

I know how you feel about cutting the plastics. We didn't want to do either. My wife lasted about a year before having her first low speed drop. Pretty much stopped, handle bars at full right lock and just touched that front break. I saw it happen and I still can't believe how quickly it went down. The amount of damage that happens from just that small drop is enough to make you blow your cookies. It's at that point you start saying why didn't I put on the frame sliders.
Do yourself a favor and put them on. You'll be glad you did. It seems like your BF and his dad are pretty handy and shouldn't have any problem installing them and making it look like a professional job.
There are many methods of marking the whole for the cut. I used the laser method. Basically you take the lowers off, mount a small laser on a tripod or some other stable place and position it about 6' or 8' away from the bike perpindicular to your bike pointing directly at the center of the engine hanger bolt. Then put the lowers back on and the laser is now marking the center of where you drill the hole. Easy process. I'm sure I've got photo's of when I did mine if you need more details.
Good luck.
