hey all

I have a 96 CBR 600 with a yoshi slip on and a K&N filter.

When I ride the bike, it rides fine. It idels a little higher than 1500 and does fine. After about 20 min of riding it, it will not idel, It just idels down real fast and then dies. Sometimes after riding it for 10 or 15 min it will idel about 3000. All this without touching the idel screw on the side of the bike.

I checked the air filter and its fine. All the hoses for the air filter are fine and connected and not drie rotted.

I was reading the manual and it said to check some kind of air valve. How do I check this to make sure it is working.

Also what else could it be (fuel filter, carbs out of sync, dirty carbs...) and what should I check before I go tearing through things I don't need to.

when it starts it dieing spell is it the idle only effected or will it not run at all?,

 

its only the idle, it SEEMS to have less power under 3 to 4000 RPM but won't idle, if I keep it reved up and ride it, it is fine

 

then you need to pull your float bowls and clean the jets heres a great write up on how to clean the carbs https://cbrforum.com/m_311016/tm.htm from the sound of it you only need to clean the jets and can leave the top diaphragms and needles alone or if your like me just clean the whole thing while its out its up to you

 

you think I need to clean them even if it only starts to die after 20 min? and it will idle fine for the first 20 min?

 

it sounds like your picking up loose dirt from the bowls and its getting into your jets, i say clean the carbs because you said it still runs if you keep it revved up, so its not a module over heating or anything, and i am assuming that the battery is staying charged, the only other thing would cause this is the idle set to low, but you would have to run around for 20 mins with the choke on which i doubt your doing,

 

ya, Im not running around with the choke on and the idle is set kinda high (2000) but if I drop the idle to 1500 or a little below, that is when it wants to start and die after about 20 min.

 

Well Iv been hearing a ticking noise and I thought it was the CCT but it turns out it is the fuel pump. It has an after market fuel pump on there and it ticks now. Once the bike cut off and the ticking still stayed so Im thinking the pump is bad. I am going to replace it but honda wants $150 for a new one. Does anyone have any sugestions?

 

Dont worry about cleaning the top end. just worry about the idle jet in each bowl.

****HOW TO CLEAN THE IDLE JET** Bike not idling, only idles with choke on, LOW RPM sucks, with no power at low RPM

On the picture above, looking down into the float bowl. Those 3 little brass things, 2 of which have slots for a screwdriver, take a very well matched screw driver to the little one, apply some downward pressure, they are in there a little tight. Take it out and try to look through it. you should see a hole a little bigger than a fishing line, if it is really small, or you cant see through, it needs to be cleaned. Take some carb cleaner, and that jet, and soak it in a pool of cleaner for about 15 mins. Take it out of the cleaner, and get some fishing line, push it through the jet, through that tiny hope, then ones its all the way through spin it on the line to get all the junk loose. Take the line out and put the jet back into the cleaner. swirl it around, take it out and wipe it down, apply more cleaner. re-install, pushing down on the screwdriver to not strip it. Then just reassemble, and your good to go.

If your bike is only not running well on idle, and low rpms, you only have to clean this!!

So today I cleaned the jets you just mentioned and replaced the spark plugs and it STILL runs like crap.Now it will run and after about 20 minutes, the bike sounds like it is not running on all cylinders and has no power at any RPM and sputters real bad. Then after I TRY and ride it like that, it might get better for a minute and run on all cylinders and then it will go back to not running on all cylinders and sputtering...
WHAT IS THE DEAL???
