First of all guys I would like to say hi to everyone being it is my first post on here .
This is my first CBR as well , used to ride R1.s then went to nakeds and for the last 6 years I have been riding a Triumph Bonneville . I really wanted another bike as I was racking the miles up on the T100 and this CBR came along at a reasonable price so I took the plunge .
Bike had been standing really or 9 years so was a risk but it is up and running and I got a chance to ride it at the weekend . really suprised how well it goes to be honest , lovely handling although i suspect rear shock is past it's best .
Anyway back to problem , it runs smooth except around 5-7k where it doesnt seem to want to pick up smartly , drop a gear or keep it pinned and it get past 7 and fly .
I have read a few threads where people have had similar problems so i thank everyone who puts the time in to post their thought and tests .
i have been through the normal DAI checks , carbs cleaned , plugs changed .air filter replaced etc , nothing looked untoward .
But I checked the fuel pump and the delivery was quite poor .
Going off the manual you link to I ound I had a 12v supply to the fuel cut off relay but the supply to pump was only 6v . When I bypassed the relay the pump was working perfectly . Checking the wiring I found the blue /yellow wire to relay wasn't giving a 12v negative supply as it should and tracing it back it come from the ecu and splits to 2/3 coil as well . What i found was the coil wires had been put on wrong , the yellow/blue needs to go to the black terminal on the coil , not the green . Swapped the over and voila , full fuel delivery . Havent tested it yet as I am waiting for a new fuel filter but am pretty sure it will be sorted . I hope this gives anyone a route to take if they are having similar problems , pay it forward
Hey, good job tracking that down! Hopefully that takes care of mid-range issues. Wouldn't hurt to put some PEA-based fuel-system cleaner into tank (way, way better than Seafoam):
- Red Line SI-1
- Techron Concentrate Plus
- 3M Max Strength Fuel System Cleaner #08814
- Royal Purple Max Atomizer 18000
- Gumout All-in-One (might be off list soon due to lowering amounts of PEA)
Thanks guys , will post a pic up when i get it back together . I am just waiting for the fuel filter to arrive and then get it out for a test ride .
Sorry about grammar on first post, I was using my old laptop and the keys are hit and miss if they are going to work , and it was late on and i just wanted to get the first post finished .
Got to say though I don't know why I have never considered a CBR600 before , they are well made and perfectly quick enough for the road , barring the odd broken lug and scratches here and there , it's fared quite well for a 26 year old bike .
I did own a CBR600RR3 race bike a few years ago for track days , and it was well sorted (122rwhp , Ohlins ,20mm cartridge forks , sigma slipper clutch , Akra Evo system, HRC cams , bellmouths , ecu etc , just thousands spent ,Scottish championship winning bike ). Unfortunately I only used it for one track day as I had a major health issue which stopped me driving/riding for over a year and I stupidly sold it , I should have really just kept hold of it . Hindsight a wonderful thing .
CBR600RR for me is too extreme for the road , if you are on it they are great but I wouldn't want one for steady away riding , as much as I wouldn't want another R1 for the same reason . The F3 is nowhere near as extreme riding position , positively armchair comfy in comparison
The F3 as you have said is a great bike, had mine for seven years before getting an F5 (2005 F4i) and that and its successors are more of a bike than I will ever be a rider and fast enough to embarrass nearly everything on the roads and legal and slightly less than legal speeds.
To be honest I would have preferred an injection bike , basically because you really need to run the F3 on E5 Super , whereas the F4i should be ok on E10 . I have the same problem with my Triumph with it being carbs . I couldn't knock the price for the bike though , so a small price to pay . IIRC the F4i has a bit more power and maybe a better chassis and suspension , sounds like enough for all but the most extreme road riding tbh .
Well that was a bad call . I put the bike together and tried the pump and it doesn't prime with just the ignition on , strangely enough the other day it did exactly that with the blue/yellow coil lead disconnected on the 2/3 coil . Obviously have done a bit of reading and the bike needs to be turning for the fuel relay to engage the pump ,it runs off the trigger wire side of the coil . so in actual fact the coil WAS connected properly with the blue/yellow on the green pin of the coil pack . I have tried the bike with the fuel relay bypassed and normal , and the pulses from the pump seem pretty close so I have to assume the relay is ok . Will give it a try tomorrow and see if anything has changed ,I have fitted a new fuel filter so maybe that might make a difference . Bike is unmolested and lowish miles (16k) so I dont think anything has been altered to make it run badly , the only non standard part is the complete exhaust including downpipes . Maybe it needs jetting to suit that , will keep you posted
Some people hook up manual switch to prime pump for emergencies. Can overheat pump if left on, so be careful.
There is also solid-state upgrade to replace clicker at bottom of pump. Really makes pump much, much more reliable.
I'll will take that in mind , thanks . Tried the bike and it does seem to be running much better , why I am not sure . Maybe the fuel filter or possibly a dry connection on the wiring that I have remedied just by plugging and unplugging parts. I really need to get it out on a longer ride to really know ,which will be the weekend . My CBR My T100 Greeves/Triumph I have just finished
