Yep, it's broken.
Broken trip meters are super common on the 95-98 gauges. Best bet is to buy another one and treat it very gently from the moment you get it.
Don't even bother with trying to fix it because it's the housing that the spring is resting it. It always breaks and when that happens there is nothing you can do as the housing is molded into the gauge itself.

Haha, that sucks man. Nice on the 88 though.
I'm looking for asweet 83-86 square light. I'm not buying another Mustang until I find one. They're my favorite. I've had an 83, 86, and a 91. I love the seats in the 87-93's but I like the rest of the square lights better... they're sweet and so hard to find in a decent conditon.
My only complaint on the Mustang is the unibody - dangit!
