Question about brakes

When i got my new chain and sprokets put on the guy told me i need new brakes. They dont seem that bad to me. Im not very mechanically skilled with the bike being im fairly new to it. But my question is are the brakes like car brakes. I mean will you hear them screetch or grind when you apply them when they are getting bad. I dont want to let them get into the rotors so i was wondering if they make noises like that like a car does when they get bad

I've not seen any of the noise makers like you see on some auto brake pads. Not that there couldn't be, but I haven't seen them. Most of the manufacturers cut a groove down the face of the pad but not all the way to the bottom. When you can't see the groove any more at one end of the pad or the other, then it's time to replace the pads. You don't want to have to replace the rotors. On a car you can get a rotor for $30 brand new. For motorcycles, new ones start around $200 and go up. You can get used ones off of ebay or from salvage yards, but avoiding replacing until you have to is best.

This should give you the idea of wot your looking for. The guy at the shop was probably just refering to your pads being close to the wear limits. Don't wait for them to start making grinding sounds before you replace them, ok.
