Default Problems shifting into gear

I swapped out my rearset for another stock piece, because the one on it was bent up and the bolt was stripped causing the shifter to wiggle. Anyways, i got it all hooked up and I can shift through all the gears half the time, and then sometimes it either won't change gear at all, or won't come out of neutral. Also, when downshifting from 2nd it goes straight into neutral, not sure if it's supposed to do that. The bike isn;t running right now, so I'm just shifting with the bike off and parked in my garage. Maybe it has to be running to function properly? I'm thinking I need to adjust the shift linkage or something... hopefully it's nothing internal.

It usually wont shift but up to second with the bike off. Shart it up and try it. If its still "hard" to to shift up or down, you might need to adjust the shift rod. It may be set in longer or shorter position sinceyou took it off.

Ah, yea I was thinking the linkage might be a hair too short. The new one I bought had a linkage about 3 inches too long, and a different bracket to mount to the tranny. So i took the original linkage off the put it on my new rearset. Turns out it wasn't perfectly adjusted, so I had to shorten it a few turns. I guess just go back and mess with the linkage length?
