Default Problem with Coolant Temp

Since the lay down I noticed that with the ignition on the temp gauge reads middle of normal.....with the bike being DEAD COLD. What did I kill? The temp sensor or the gauge?

The shop manual is available for download somewhere on the forum here. In section 18, page 15 it has the procedure for testing the thermo sensor. That should tell you if it's working correctly or not.

...yah...I'm going to spend the money on a new gauge cluster just to see if it works....and on top of that...an incorrect gauge cluster[sm=headbang.gif]

when the bike is off before you start it, and still cold, does it still read that high?

Yes, with Key OFF Engine OFF the temp gauge is at the bottom like it should be. With Key ON Engine OFF and the bike ICE cold the temp gauge reads middle of normal. Messed up connection somewhere?

Correction, with key off engine off it rest NEAR the bottom, not complete on the stop

Sounds like you have a bad sensor, bad gauge, or a short. Follow the procedures in the manual to test the electronic components. At this point... it's a process of elimination to see what is causing the problem with your gauge.
