RE: oil on my plugs
oil on my plugs, wot a great name for a **** movie. Wot you have on your plugs my not be oil, but a sooty deposit from an over rich mix (mixed with fuel deposits). Bad news though if it is oil then you may be staring down the barrel (da,da) of worn rings. As you have said though, you usually get other symptoms associated with it. Peel off some wheres once the bike is warmed up on your next ride & gradually build the revs up & check for smoke. Also with rings you can get an oily (not sooty) residue forming at the end of your pipe.

I think it may be an over rich mixture myself. I swapped my plug out recently and there was that soot around the threads and the plugs were clearly over rich. I've got the carbs off and rebuilt, however, I'm not sure I am up to fixing the fixture levels (something I've heard can be a challenge). I am resyncing the carbs though and wondering if that may help.. <shrug>

yeah i have wanted to pull the carbs and rebuild them for a while not. this might just be the push i need to get it done. maybe that will be my weekend project. as for oil on the pipe, theres nothing there. i rode for about 45 minutes, pulled over and went through the revs slowly and at about 10,000 i got a small puff of brown smoke buy only for a second.

Go to Advance Auto and get iridiums for your bike.Ask for plugs for a 2000 CBR 929.$29 and change out the door for a set of 4.
Rejet your carbs. The only time you need to rebuild is if the bike has been sitting for a while.
Check all air filters, including that thingy that's back in the emulsion tubes behind the airbox and make sure it's all clean and clear.
Brown smoke is good.Oil burning smoke is blue and has it's own unique scent.Ask me how I know that

thanks for the advise. i knew it wasn't oil smoke cause of the color. i have had enough old school trucks die on me to know that one. i don't think it wise to go around smelling blue smoke lol.i pulled my K & N and cleaned it. i also went in and pulled that other one and it was a little dirty but i cleaned it for now and will replace it later. all the problems i have been having are making me believe that when the previous owner had put on the pipe and K & N he never jetted the carbs. now ill have to drop the dime and do it.

i talked to a guy at cycle gear and a few posts i have read all say that any mods will need jetting. since most jets are adjustable you just go that route and keep changing the jets the more you mod your bike. a slip on and k&n will need a rejetting. i know i had to have it done on my 98 F3 when i got a pipe and k&n put on there. It would backfire all the time until i got it jetted. now this bike is starting to do the same thing so i will have to jet that as well
