NOOB question.
 

Just bought 95 f3 with 34,xxx miles. There is a ticking noise coming from the front right side of the engine that comes and goes at different rpms. My question is, What could be the cause?

i would say thats a cam chain tensioner problem,

its a easy fix just 2 bolts to take off and on, however im no expert on this yet so wait for others to chime in but thats what i would say

Might possibly be one of the rod bearings saying "i'm worn, change me!" lol but hopefully it is just the cam chain tensioner. I had a knock on my Ninja 250 and it was rod bearings.. I dunno. Try cam chain first. Much less work to check that than rod bearings lol. Good luck!

From what you described and where the sound is coming from, it do sound as if your cam chain tensioner has gone bad. Like MrBomb said, it is a really easy fix. I would recommend an after market manual adjusting one. You can find them on ebay.

Manual CCT is the way to go.50 bucks,two bolts and a 1/2 hour labor and you're rockin

People talk about a manual CCT, but take a look at how well the factory automatic one did. 34,000 miles and 14 years. I'd bet that it's the original CCT on your motor. The automatic tensioner never required anyone to adjust it in 14 years. You're replacing it with one that every so often, you'll have to check it, or at least think about it.

IMO for what it's worth.

The OEM ones are hydraulic and bleed down over time.This is how all oem's are (Yammy,Suzi,Kawi,etc etc).The manual one you can adjust,the oem one you cannot.Manual one is the way to go.
