Default no headlight

i was driving down the road and i switched my headlight to brights and i noticed my headlight was not working. i switched it back and the indicator on the display still said that it was on brights even though i switched it to regular and now my headlight is not working at all.
im figuring its a wire problem but am curious to see if anyone has had the same thing happen to them because i don't know alot about wiring.

thanks.

Power to the headlight starts at the battery. Goes to the ignition key switch, then to thefuse block, then over to the Start switch. From the start switch over to the dimmer switch and on to the headlight. When the start switch is pressed, it opens the circuit to the headlight while it applies power to the starter. The starter needs all the power it can to start the bike, which is why the headlight turns off when you start it. Once you let go of the start button, the headlight turns back on. On one occasion I had the solder connection brake loose inside the starter button on the right hand grip. If the headlight doesn't work at all, naturally check the fuses under the cover on the right upper cowl. If they're good, then you have to start following the power to see where it's getting lost.

+1 for the loose solder connection at the starter switch

I'm bumping this to point out it was helpful in repairing my bike tonight although slightly different than idodirt.

-My headlight was OUT.. Checked the fuse/wiring/plug/etc nada.

-I wasn't getting voltage to the connector behind the headlight/gauges so I wanted to see where I might be losing it. Noticed in the manual that the schematic shows the headlight wiring going through the starter switch/button. (as stated)

-The way I "op" tested the starter button failure was by jiggling/pushing the starter button w. the key ON but kill (run/stop) switch OFF. I could see the headlight kind of blinking so this obviously indicated my issue.

-So now I unplugged the starter/headlight connectors behind the gauges cluster or you could pop off one of you Batt terminals then I opened the starter/run switch, removed the bar end so I could slip off the entire assembly to get at the starter switch.

-I popped mine open and it wasn't a broken wire but rather a dirty/sticky switch. Cleaned it up and plugged it back in and it was good to go!

Good stuff guys!
