Need help troubleshooting
I took my 96 f3 out for a ride this morning. Bike started up fine. After riding for about 8miles it just shut off on me, while I was cruising(doing about 70). Felt like I ran out of gas but when I checked I had at least half a tank. So while on the shoulder I started her back up but when I turn the throttle she would just shut off. I kept trying this and eventually ran the battery down.
My buddy came and picked up the bike and took it to my house. We took it out and I jumped the battery. It started right up and ran fine. I took it around the block and everything seemed fine. I let it sit and idle for a second and it just shut off on me. I started it back up and it did the same thing it did when I was on the shoulder. I turn the throttle and it just shuts off. It seems like it has something to do with the temperature of the engine. It rides fine when the temp gauge is low,but once it heats up it wont run.
Anyone ever experienced this?
Before I take it to the dealer I wanted to see if any of my fellow forum members could help me out with this one. Any help and advice would be great/
Thanks in advance
Joran B.
Sometime ignition coils will do that once they get warm. It will run fine for a while until the bike gets warm then stop all of a sudden. Then once they cool down it will run again. Could be something else electrical also. Did you make sure your fuel pump is working correctly?
sounds like a fuel problem.
check the fuel line front he tank to see if there flowing well, if there just driping then there's a blockage in the tank, remove and clean.
i am not sure if these bike have fuel filters, i only have had mine for a week, but if there is it may be cloged. replace it.
then theres the carbs, it my be possable, but i am unsure how possable, the floats could be geting stuck or there not open all the way when need to be.
but in any case i think the bike is being starved for fuel.

Thanks guys, Im going to start taking the bike apart and start testing stuff. I did a search and I found a couple of posts with similar problems. They say it coul be the regulator/rectifier, so I will start there.
I think it is an electrical problem, I just have to locate it.
Im still open to suggestions though.
Don't be surprised if everything electrical tests out just fine. Alot of times they will test fine... you will have to test them once your bike stops.... its not fun. Then you will get the correct reading.
You were right. Everything electrical tested out fine.
I think I may have found the problem though. I might have just ran out of gas. I probably ran the battery down trying to start her up repetatively. I am not familiar with the reserve tank. If I run out of gas on the regular tank will it stop and I have to pull over and switch it to reserve before I can startit up again.
Because I filled up the tank and charged the battery and now it seems to be running fine.
What do you think? Is that how the reserve tank works?

Bringing this back from the dead... I'm having a similar problem, except that the bike has plenty gas, and yes the petcock is set to on. I can start the bike and it will run, but eventually stall out. If I let it sit for a while, it will start right back up again, but after a few minutes, it will stall again.
I get the feeling that it's the pump, and that while I'm waiting, fuel is filling the float bowls, but then when I start it up and run the bike, whatever fuel is being fed by gravity isn't enough to sustain the engine.
Sound possible to you guys?
