Default low mount exhaust ?

I'm sure asking this question I'll either not get an answer or be told why I should not do it. But I have seen some f3's with the exhaust mounted under the (rider) foot peg, I have a shortened V&H that I would like to mount this way, anyone have any advice on how to tackle this?

Well the main problem with that is there isn't any room to do it, the final collector of the manifold is just inches away from the footpeg. I'd SUPPOSE you could cut and shorten the pipes that go under the engine but that might and probably will have a negative effect on how the gases are vented and how the engine runs. If your modded exhaust fail to produce any back pressure you will risk burning your exhaust valves.

Ok thanks. Next question would be : what would be preventing me from using an exhaust for newer bike meant for low mount and having an adapter or custom mid pipe made to match diameters and angle. Such as;

Also, how do I know if my exhaust has proper back pressure currently? As I said my exhaust is cut I repacked it rather tight. But all of my mid power is non existing. 1-3k nice pull 4-8 nothing 8 and on pull is back. I'm a novice on the wrench but I do have the manual. By the way my bike is a 98 F3.

Well, nothing really. I understood the original question a little wrong. I thought you wanted to put the muffler inside the lower fairing where it does not fit. That particular muffler in the picture seems to have a lambda so the plug hole would need to be plugged with a proper bolt. Doing it like in the pic should work if the can will fit in there. Some of the OEM cans are resonator type and more or less tuned to go with the engine it`s supposed to be with but they can work on others as well although not necessarily perform 100% as meant. Basically a can off another inline four 600 should work well enough but one that`s meant for say a Triumph Daytona 955i probly wont as it is a three cylinder engine. Sure the gasses come through but it could sound a bit funny.

Well, that quote pretty much answers itself. Having a massive flat spot like that would indicate that your engine is not running happily with the exhaust, lifting the jet needles half to one slot could help. It`s a matter of trial and error to get them spot on.

Having a some kind of a muffler behind the manifold should provide SOME back pressure assuming the inner diameter of the can is not considerably larger than the mid pipe. Packing the can tight or not shouldn`t have affect to this. I cut a hole on my mid pipe and made a Y-joint to get a second can to the left, I did get some roughness with it at mid rev range but honestly it`s so small I can`t be bothered to do anything to it.

I`m no expert on exhaust things but basically if you modify your pipe you should also tune your engine to run with it.

Thank you so much for the detailed response. My bike is a street fighter, fairing clearance space issue is non existent. Lambda? Not sure what that means. I'll shop around for a nice shorty that may be meant to mount standard and have a muffler shop make a mid pipe bent to spec to mount it to the rear seat. I'm bringing my bike into the shop to have my carb boots replaced and carbs synced/tuned to get the bike on the up and up.
