RE: idle question
That isn't normal. The bike is suppose to idle at 1,200 + or - 100 (Cali model 1,400 + or - 100). I would look at output of your charging system. If it is between 13 V and 15.5 V @ 5,000 rpm, then your charging system is working fine. I would then turn to the battery and run a load test on it. You'll have to take to a place like Autozone to have this done. The technician will need the CCAfor the battery which is 120 A. You could have a battery that is dying a slow death and discharges quickly when under a load. If it is the battery dying because it's old, it'll get to the point where the bike will not run because of the battery being too dead run the bike.

RE: idle question
I highly recomend getting on this because if your reg/rec is still good and your battery isn't, it is causing the reg/rec to work excessively and builds up heat. This heat build up will eventually cause the reg/rec to burn up. This heat build up also causes the connectors in your charging system to melt together from the excessive resistance. Just speaking from experience on this. Had to replace my connector between the stator and bike harness and also at the reg/rec connector.
