been trolling for a while but never posted

got a 97 f3, so im at laconia bike week yesterday and i driving down the strip when suddenly the bike dies. go to start it and the batteries dead, which i dont get because i was driving when it died. so now ive charged the battery and its working fine. i thought maybe it was the alternator but i checked that and thats not it so i cant figure out why the battery would die while running. the best thing i can think of is that the there is some kind of short in the fan and when it tried to turn on it shorted out the bike and killed the battery but i dont know. does anybody have any ideas, is there a history with these bikes having electrical problems?

It sounds like it could be your regulator rectifier. Ride it around for a day in your nieghborhood, if the battery diesagain, then it's not getting a charge. Your stator is what charges the battery but the regulator controls the charge.

 

ok so the stator charges the battery while its running. i was thinking there would be an alternator like a car. a friend of mine who works on cars said that if i took a multimeter and put the positive terminal to pos and the negative one to something metal on the bike it read that there was about 14 volts coming into the battery then that ment the alternator and regulator were working. does this same thing apply to bikes to test the stator and regulator? because i did this and it said that they were working. im going away for the weekend so i cant work on it till monday but the first thing im going to do is take it for a ride and see if it happens again.

The charging system of bikes is different than a car. When the bike is at an idle or in the low RPM range, there is no charge going back into the battery. If you take a reading at the battery, the voltage will be that of the battery. If put the RPMs in the range of 4K to 5K, you should get a reading from 13.5 to 15 volts. This is means that the battery is being charged. If you still have battery voltage at 4k to 5k RPMs, than it is most likely your Regulator/Rectifier (R/R) has failed.
I HIGHLY recommend that you inspect the connection of the charging system for melted connections. There is a connection for the stator located among a cluster of connections which is forward of the battery and under the tank. Look for the White/Clear one. If it is brown and black, its been damaged from overheating. While there, make sure there the connection for the main fuse is not damaged from overheating too, it will be the one with a spare fuse under it. The connection itself is red with a couple of clips on each side. Also check the connection for the R/R. If by chance you do get a reading that is 13.5 to 15 volts, then you need to have the battery tested. You'll need to know the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) which is 120 and the age of the battery for the technician to properly administer the test.
