To take out running lights, there will be a third wire going to the light fixture. Check with a voltmeter/trouble light to see which wire is hot when the key is on. That's the wire you want to cut and cap off. Then use the other two for your new single filament setup.

All is now good in the hood thanks to 74Demon, lights are working great. It's sometimes the smallest things that yield the biggest results.
