Default F3 battery won't stay charged...help asap!

Alright well to start this off, when I first bought the bike the battery was weak, I drove it home and when I shut it off I heard a sizzeling noise and the smell of rotten eggs...knew right away that the battery was ****, and of course it was dead.

So I went out, got a new battery and that lasted abouta week. Me being the dumb *** bought yet another battery, and it has lasted about a month or so. Latley while riding at night when I first start the bike I tend to notice that the headlights are bright, and the cluster is very well lit, and stays that way for about 10 minutes of riding. Then out of no where everything flickers from bright to dim, and then just stays dim....as if its only running from the battery.

Tonight on my way home I stop and got gas...got back on the bike and it would not start. It cranked slow, lights were dim...and eventualy the battery died. I got a buddy to come and see if a jump would do anything, and it did. The bike cranked for a few and fired right up and ran fine the whole way home.

Pulled up to the garage and shut it off. Let it sit for a few minutes and tried to start it again. The battery had about enogh charge to crank once and that was it. I felt the voltage regulator and WOW it was hot. Keep in mind...it was about a 3 mile ride from the gas station to my house...

I am leaning twords the regulator being my problem...because obviously my stator is working, once the bike is running it will stay running...

could someone PLEASE help me out with this? Could the regulator be killing my battery cells?

YES, its cactus, get an aftermarket heavy duty unit & it won't happen again. Common problem. They overheat, thats wot kills em.

Thought I would also add...I ohmd out the 3 yellow wires to the stator and they are all good(.4-.9ohms). Also there is battery power to the regulator and the ground to the regulator is good as well. I am 99% sure this is my problem...but I would like some other people to back me on this before I spend the money(being a college kid...tend not to have a lot of $)

Thanks once again!

Oh, & don't rely on push starting your bike (or jump start) once the battery is completely discharged, you'll get backfiring, rough idle etc.

Probably the regulator, I just replaced mine, and I had similar troubles. But before you just buy a regulator, I suggest that you follow the steps in this link:

Your breaking my heart the heavy duty unit is about the same price as the Honda original. Don't go 2nd hand cos that will crap itself eventually.

I had the exact same problem with the exact same symptoms - right down to the compression starting. The Regulator/Rectifier was spent. I got a new one and everything's back to normal.

You need a new R/R.

akcbrf3,
Check the connections in the charging system too. I was having similar issues and when I replaced the R/R, the problem didn't completely go away. Eventually I got tired of the battery dying on me and I started looking around and found that my connector where the stator connects into the bike harness melted. I replaced it and put some dielectric grease in the connections (the R/R and stator connection). The charging issue seems to be a thing in the past now. Just in case you're not sure where it is located, the stator connection where it connects into the bike harness is in the battery box but just forward of the battery. You have to remove the tank to see it. It'll be the connection with the 3 yellow wires.
