RE: Driving in low RPM
For city driving the 3k rpm is normal and is what is recommended in the honda manual. (shift points) I notice I start to get my power past 3k and 5k is plenty for city. I weigh 275 and even then I rarely have to get past 5k to get the bike really moving. 7 or 8 k is just going to waste you gas and make more noise. Yea, the bike takes off big time after 8k, but that's what you need for the track.
I suspect that you need to change the plug or coil. The service manual shows tha above 5k there is more voltage generated by the alternator, so that could be where you are getting that cylinder back. However, it's not very normal for a plug to get fuel fouled and then start working correctly again time after time. I suspect you are just getting a weaker spark as compared to the other cylinders, or the carb is out of adjustment and causing the dumping of more fuel than should be in that cylinder. It may be giving the appearance of no spark.
Also, I have 28k miles on my bike. I have been getting 43 mpg with new iridium plugs, high test gas, fresh oil and all other fluids. I feel slight vibrations in all driving from the engine and I suspect the carbs need adjusting as do the valves. I'm wondering if that could give me at least 5 more mpg. I got 164 miles before reserve last week. I'd like to improve that to at least 50mpg if possible.

I'm still getting about 192 miles before reserve at 50.5 MPG.

I get about 220 miles on a full tank, before the reserve.
