Drain the tank?
If you get gas anywhere NEAR your mouth while starting a syphon, you are doing it VERY wrong. You only need to get the gas level in the hose to come up, out, and then below the tank. Then gravity and vacuum pressure pull it the rest of the way. What are you doing, sucking and spitting??!?!

Put as much of the hose/tube/siphon as possible into the tank, let it fill itself with gas.
Put your thumb or finger of choice over the end you're holding onto.
Direct thumb end of hose towards a bucket or the like on the ground, release thumb.
If done correctly, the hose should have enough gas in it to pull it out.
If level is low, use other source of gas to fill up the siphon.
No need to suck

I think maybe we're missing something easy here. Get a 2' piece of fuel line that you can pick up at PepBoys or someplace like that. Turn the petcock off, disconnect the fuel line from the petcock and attach your extra hose to the petcock. Turn the petcock to reserve and watch all the fuel drain out. You should be able to get 99.5% of the fuel out. That's based on my riding on reserve until the engine quit running.

Not sure my petcock is working. I know it damn sure isn't installed right
You only suck until the fuel level in the line is below the fuel tank (helps to use a clear hose). Given that your line has to a reach a bucket or whatever on the floor, you're only sucking the line until the fuel is only 1/3 of the way through the line, PLENTY of distance away from your mouth.
Gunnar's method is nice too.
