Default Coolant Lines to Cyl Head

I have a cbr600 out of a wrecked 1998. I'm installing it in a small formula car. I have a few coolant lines that I don't know what to do with.

There are two small ports on the water pump. Anyone know what they need to be hooked up to?

There are two ports on the cyl head also. I'd guess that these would hook up to the ports on the water pump, but I'm not sure, and I've been told that somehow or other I am supposed to hook in a set of coolan lines to the carb.

I'd sure appreciate it if someone could set me straight on this.

The one off the very top of the valve cover goes into the factory air box. The lines on the back side are for the cooling system. There are several coolant lines on the back side of the head there. I'll try my best to describe this. The small line on thelower portion of the water pump goes to the rightside of the carbs. The outletleft side of the carbs goes to thethermo-valve which was was held in place with the bolt that secures the starter motor. From there, it goes into the input right behind the thermostat. The upper smaller hose on the water pump goes straight to the input on the left side of the head. Hope I was clear enough.

I think that helps. I'll have to go out and look things over. To summarize:

Bottom port on WP goes to carbs then through Thermovalve and into thermostat housing.

Top port on WP goes straight to left side cyl. head.

We are talking standard left/right? Where right is (as in a car) on the passenger side?

Any problem by-passingthe plumbing to the carbs? I assume it is just for carb heat in cold weather?

What is the point of the left side line going from WP to cyl. head? Is it just to ensure some circulation to the head when the thermostat is closed?

I know the car you are talking about. Waay to expensive for my budget.

Here is a pic of the car I am working with:

This is what is called a Formula 500. When I'm done, I expect the car to come in at right around 700 pounds. You can find lots of info about these cars at www.f500.org, orbetter still at www.eformulacarnews.com Look for the section on Formula 500. You can usually find a cheap old chassis that can be bought and modified to suit your tastes. There are a few guys, including myself who are making the swapto motorbike power in these cars.

Here are a couple oflinks to a Formula 500 swap job that is STUPID fast even by Ariel Atom standards. It's very cheap by comparison too.

You can read all about it here:

It's not the most refined car, but the guy isn't done with it yet. Lots of potential for fun there.

If you check out:

You will find tons of info on Motorcycle engine cars. The discussion on Formula D cars should giveyou lots ofbackgroundinfo.

Have fun!

Bottom port on WP goes to carbs then through Thermovalve and into thermostat housing.
bottom hose connects to the right side of the carbs. You should see a V looking plastic piece between carbs 3 & 4 which is then connect to a similar V shaped piece between carbs 1 & 2.
From that V shaped plastice piece between carbs 1 & 2, the line then goes to the thermo-valve and then from there to the thermostat housing.

Top port on WP goes straight to left side cyl. head.
There should be a water jacket port just under and between the intake for cylinders 1 & 2. This is were the small upper hose from the WP connects.

Yes, when I say left side, I mean as you are sitting on the bike and facing forward with it. In regards to just not hooking that up the carb plumbing... I don't know what would happen. My guess is that it might make getting the engine running when cold a little harder. The thermo-valve is suppose to block the flow at 163 - 171 degrees F (A little FYI for ya). That doesn't me that you can just block the upper hose from the WP though. I can't really figure out what the upper hose would be for. My guess is it dumps a small amount of fluid into the flow that passes through the thermostat and if it is cold, keeps the thermostat from fully opening. Notpositive aboutthisthough.
