my bike is a 98 f3 with 3500 miles on the clock when i bought it last year
all advise would be greatly appreciated

those are the identification marks commonly found on parts that have come out of a salvage yard. normally, they use some form of short hand to identify parts once they are pulled from the bike so they dont mix them up. honestly, if the bike performs as advertised, i wouldnt be concerned about it. all it means is that at some point in the bikes life, it got a salvaged head. not the worst thing to ever happen. at least someone cared about this thing enough to replace a pretty expensive part.

just received this email back from a Honda dealer here in the U.K-
"Hi Anthony,
The carb markings are definitely made during manufacture, probably by the carb manufacturer.
As for the cylinder head, I would think that it is a batch marking done during the machining stage of the head.
I see no cause for concern in either case.
Best regards
Mark"
opinions? anyone else ever seen markings on their cylinder head?
cheers,
Ant.

no i have not. those were made either with a hand etcher or a scribe. honda stamps everything during their casting process with a machine, and any self respecting machine shop would never mark up someones part during a machining job. what you have was made by someone that owned the part at one point or another (IE, junkyard). dont always trust honda dealers, some of the dumbest techs and parts guys work for the dealers... you want an answer you can trust, find a high performance shop and ask them.

cheers jeason15,i will have a search around for a respectable tuning garage around my way and get their opinion,im with you,i just dont understand why a new head would have these markings scratched into them, surely a salvage part.
But another member on here has had a new engine casing shipped over to America from japan that did have very similar markings etched into it by hand though
