Default Chain & Sprocket Combo

Need some advice. I'm getting ready to buy a new chain and sprocket combo and was wondering what your thoughts are.. I've heard the more popular choice is 1 down in the front and 2 up in the rear. I was wondering if you guys still recommend that combo or should I maybe only go 2 in the rear or don't even bother? What kind of increased RPM could I see at a given MPH over stock? How much fuel mileage have you guys lost? I'm really not to concerned about mileage as long as it's not a HUGE difference.. Thanks in advance!!

mine is -1/-2 and it was the dumbest thing the previous owner could have done. I am going to be going the -1/+2 rout after I get the ole girl running again.

Uh, interesting.. Didn't that defeat the purpose? I was always told that going down 1 in front is like going up 2 in the back.. So by your numbers he basically didn't change anything?? So you think that would be the best route then (-1/+2)? Thanks for the reply by the way!!!!

Ya it is basically the same EXCEPT... I rev the hell out of my engine 8k at 80mph. So should not be that high. He said he did it for more torque. what a dumbass

Yeah that's running it pretty hard.. I think right now I'm around 6600 at 85.. I'm wondering how much more RPM I'll see at the same MPH??

-1 at the front equals to +3 at the back.
The best Chain/Sprocket mod is 520 pitch chain (its just sooooo much lighter then 530 that you wouldn't believe it and hence its lighter engine revs quicker) with -1 at the front.
I would not bother going any bigger at the rear if you are commuting on highways or fast roads as you'll be reving out much higher.
On some race circuits here in Ireland i run 13 front and 49 rear :-)

So you recommend only changing the front? I do commute on a freeway, how much of a difference would I be looking at?

Not sure mate, it'll have a better initial acceleration but will be revving a bit higher (may be 1.5-2kRPM's higher) then with stock front sprocket.
Is it 14T you have at the front or 15T at the moment?
Its either drop 1 at the front or add 3 at the back, same difference to the final gear ratio.

If you drop 1 in the front you don't have to change your chain length. Now if you add to much to the back you need a longer chain. The -1/+2 normal setup you don't need the change the chain.

Stix, if you go to this site.... gearingcommander.com .... you can input all the different gearing combinations you're thinking about and see exactly what it will do to your rpms at different speeds, gears, chain, etc.
