Depends, the chains have sealed 'O' rings with grease inside the rollers, a lube may be all it needs, how old is the chain? & apart from the dust, is there any sign of wear on the sprockets? If you keep a chain lubed, they will last a lot longer as well as you being aware of any potential problems before the bugger snaps & either takes a rest in the crankcase or wraps itself around the front or rear sprocket, keep it lubed baby.

A guy down the block looked over my chain and said lube it first. He works on his own trikes (he rides Harleys with sidecars ). I replaced the chain and sprockets anyways as I'd rather be comfortable with a known condition than worried with an unknown.

Replacing the chain was mostly easy. Pressing the damn master link with it sliding all out of alignment was the biggest PITA

rust doesn't matter, kinking does. When it starts kinking, change it. otherwise just lube it up.

no, it means that corrosion has made it passed the O rings and the chain starts to bind up.

I hope you weren't over tightening your own chain thinking that was how to fix the kinks. Tight chains are bad!
