Default Chain oiling

Hi guys i'm new to bikes so could someone give me a point in the right direction of how often i should oil my chain? Is it best to use the 'self oiling device' thing on the side? and how often should i fill it up. Also, on this 'self oiling device' there seems to be a tube attatched to the plug that covers the small filling hole which doesn't go anywhere. Is this an overflow pipe?

I'm not a fan of automatic chain oilers. They generally create a mess and it's just another thing to go wrong. Honda recommends tha the chain be lubricated every 500 miles. More often if you're in a dirty environment, like live on a dirt road, or live in a rain forest. There are many different types of chain oils and lubes with pros and cons to each. I use the Dupont Teflon Chain Lube. It got good reviews and works well for me.

The scott oilers are supposed to be good coz you can adjust how little (or much) oil goes on the chain, I tend to oil my chain every week, I like to do it when the chain is hot and use the PJ1 oil it is very sticky.
If I was you I would give the chain a real good clean to get all the old oils off using a degreaser(as new oils do not tend to stick well to over brands of oil, or so I am told) and then find a good brand of chain lube and stick with it.

For deep cleaning (A little messy and time consuming, but works well nonetheless):

Clean your chain with WD40 and a brush.Put a long rag underneath your chain, 'cause it will run off onto the floor. Cycle Gear has brushes specifically for chains,if you want to go that route.Otherwise, you can go to a bicycle shop and get a sprocket brush.

Wipe the chain and tire clean with a rag,or old t-shirts that you are going to throw away.Get all of the residue off the chain.Get all of it off your rear tire if there is any.All of it.

I have used Honda Pro chain lube since 1998.Goes on clear, does not come off and has given me long chain life on a variety of bikes ( 3 VFRs;3 CBRs, 1 Race;1 HD chopper;1 DR200;2 SV650s,1 race;1 XR100)

My 2 pennies. Best of luck.

Not a huge fan of spraying WD40 (degreaser) on something you are trying to grease.

Is the idea of putting WD40 (degreaser) to get rid of all the old grease and start fresh? Is this what i should do?

You don't grease a chain. The newer race chains don't even require lube.Just keep 'em clean.Anyway.....

Like my post says, you must wipe the chain clean after you spray/scrub it.This is to get the road grime off the chain.WD40 goes where your rag can't.

It's a bit more meticulous,the way I do it.This way I know it's clean.But that's how I do it.

Plus,WD40 is great for getting road grime off your swingarm, rear wheel, chainguard and sprocket cover.

Best of luck dude.

Does the F3 even have an automatic chain oiler??? I have some really sticky black crap (chain grease or oil) on the little peice of the fairing that goes behind the shifter and the kickstand... i clean it every once in a while really good... thinking it wont come back... but it always does... what is it??? is it chain lube or oil.. it is BLACK man!!!! and sticky... it has to be a type of grease not oil. What do you think? thanks
