I have a 1997 CBR and I'm trying to remove the carbs. The manual says "each carb intake manifold is equiped with 2 clamp screws. One screw secures the manifold to the engine and the other one secures the manifold to the carburator. To remove the carbs loosen the engine clamps only." Understandable, but I can only see one of the four screws of these clamps. However, I can see all the manifold to engine screws.

If anyone knows what I'm referring to...is there any reason why I can't take the manifold to engine screws off? They are the only ones I can see, but the manual specifies not too...

You can take them off but you dont need too. Look a little closer for the clamps, they are there. You might need a long #2 screwdriver to get some of them off. I believe you have to get them from both sides. Use a flashlight and look closly. There is enough room to get a screwdriver in there. Once you loosen them you will have to move the carbs around and loosen the boots. Sometimes a lot of force is needed. And when it comes time to put them back on put some oil on the boots and the outside of the carb and they will slide in a lot better.

 

thanks...I'll keep looking. You are right according to the manual the screws they want me to take off come off on both sides. Carbs 1-2 on one side and carb 3-4 on the other. I was able to find the screw for carb 2 last night. Not easy to get to, but I found it. I'll keep looking for the screws on carbs 3-4. Much tighter area on that side. It's just strange how I can see all four screws of the clamps the manual says not to take off. Go figure. Thanks again..I'll keep looking and keep you posted.

 

well, u can take them off just when u ready to reattach the carb take those plastic hoses off da carb and put them on the engine block and tighten them first and note which way the top clamps face/angled then attach the carb and tighten the top bolts.. well thats what i did anyway.. oyea u need some leverage when ur prying the carb off.. like a broom stick handle

 

this guy is absolutely right. you will need a long philips screwdriver(the longer the better). I just took mine off and had them cleaned about a month ago.

 

I believe you have to take your upper engine mounts off... if you haven't already. They are black and have 3 bolts.

 

i didnt take my engine mounts off? just i just had one of those flex screwdrivers..

 

craftsman makes a screw driver just for this purpose well not really but it is a #2 phillips extra long when your looking into the motor area kinda move around the lower hose that covers the manifold boots and you will see the screws. and when you do get the carbs off dont rip the nub that goes through the metal bracket and keeps the screw from turning otherwise you will have to replace it.

 

I do have a long Craftsman philips screw driver. Not sure if it is a #2 or not, but it worked. With help from the above posts I was finally able to find ALL four screws! The screws on carb #1 and #2 weren't bad. But on carb #3 and #4 it sure was easier with the upper engine mount off. (thanks cbr_newbie) I even unhooked the clutch cable to get in there more, moved some black hose and there was the last screw! Don't exactly have the carbs out yet, but I'm getting there. Something on the right side is holding them on. This stuff just takes patience I guess. Glad I have the time and it is the dead of winter.

I'm doing all this so I can install my Factory Pro jet Kit! But I got to tell you this is a little more work then I thought.
