Bought a 1996 CBR 600 today for $475 with 24xxx miles and the worst point job ever. I'll post some pictures later. Anyway I bought it knowing it didn't run, trying to diagnose what's actually stopping it. Battery in bike is trash so I slapped mine I'm and boom lights and all, every light works as it should. Turn the kill switch off and it cranks but do sent even try to roll over even with throttle. Almost like I'm trying to start it with the kill switch on.
I have checked all fuses so far and all good just wondering what you guys think it could be.
I've herd the rectifier is a big problem on these but don't know what it does when one is bad.
Any input is helpful. Overall this bile is in good shape engine looks polished like someone had gone threw it.

I mean a few things here. Do you know when it was ran last? Is the fuel in it bad? Was there fuel at all in it? Need to check out the carbs. Basically its coming down to process of elimination. Make sure its getting fuel. Pull a plug, make sure its getting spark. Then I would check compression. Obviously as you said it could be an electrical component where as there is some tests you can do on said components to test them. You can check that out here.
Get a multi meter.

The fact it turns over is good. The R/R charges the battery, but since your battery is good, don't worry if your R/R is not working properly as it won't prevent it from starting. The amount of time since it last ran and if there was fuel in the carburetors is going to play a big role in this. Long period of time without running and fuel in carbs would mean that all the little passagways for the choke circuit, and the idle circuits and what not are going to be plugged or restricted. On these bikes, opening the throttle isn't going to help much. Once you answer the time question you'll be able to get better answers here on the forum.
BTW, it sounds like a fun project.

It had sat for 2 years before I got it. I planned on cleaning carbs and fluids and plugs. It has gas in the tank when I got it. Battery was completely shot I put mine from 89 in it and it cranks like the kill switch is on doesn't try to roll over even with a little throttle. Could this be as simple as no gas getting to carbs?

Ok did everything I should have done aside from taking the carbs completely out and cleaning each part. With a little starting fluid I got it to continuously backfire but not idle. I did may be two or three times get it to idle but only for a 10 seconds or less. Not sure where to go from here.
