i just recently baught a 96 f3 with 6900 miles on it. it rode fine for about a month untill about a week ago. i was riding it like normal and it started boggins and then died. after a little bit of messing with the choke i was able to get the bike to start but would only stay running if i gave it throttle. as soon as i let go of the gas, the rpm would drop and the bike would die once again. i then took it to a mechanic who cleaned the cards and replaced the plugs. when i picked up the bike i rode it not even half a mile down the street and the same thing happened, boged and died. this time, it would idle at about 500 with the choke turned up all the way. as soon as you gave it gas or turned the choke down it would die. the mechanic says it needs a new fuel pump. at this point i am clueless as to what to do. could the gas be bad? the is some crap in the gas tank that looks like it could clog up the fuel pump. should i believe the guy and spend another 300? or is there any other things i could look into. any help is apreciated. thanks guys

The symptoms your bike has can be a few things. The bike runs ok, apart from when you start it? Have you checked the idle adjustment? There is an opening about 4inches back from the fuel tap, you will see a black gnarled ****, clockwise increases the revs. Should idle at 1200rpm. (some US models idle at 1400rpm)
Crap in your fuel tank & lines can obstruct the fuel pump, (also carbies and fuel filter) but this would be apparent at speed as well as when you stop. (Running the bike of full choke would make it run pretty ragged as well!). A blocked or dirty air filter can cause rough idle as well. OK I'm not saying the mechanic is trying to rip you off, but if I went to a mechanic who didn't tell me they thought it was the fuel pump before they made me pay for cleaning up the carbs!!!!.
Clean the crud out the tank, while the tanks off check the air filter, Hit it with some new fuel, check the idle adjustment and bottom line find a better mechanic.

Don't buy a fuel pump right yet. What your bike is doing is running out of gas. There could be crap in the line or in the petcock. If you clean all that out and it still does it then I would see if the fuel pump is working correctly. Take your tank off completly and clean it out.
