Default Bike Problems

Hello everyone.. I was wondering if you guys could help me out? I have a 96 F3 and the bikes seems to run really well 99% of the time. Well I experienced a problem this morning. The bike started like usual, I let it run for about a minute or so and jumped on it to come to work. Well when I got out of my driveway the bike started running extremely rough and died. The only way I could get the bike started and stay running briefly was with full choke. If I gave it any throttle it died. Well the battery final died and I had to walk it back. I put a charger on it real quick and unplugged the connectionsat the Accel Ignition box and the Rectifier and tried it again and the bike fired up and I was able to drive it to work (ran great!!). This has happened one other time. I was heading up an on ramp to the freeway and bounced off the rev limiter real hard and the bike did the same exact same thing except I was able to get it to run and it finally cleared out. I'm thinking Ignition/electrical but not sure where to start. I appologize for the long post, any help would be appreciated!!!

Since the battery failed, its most likely the regulator (probably the most common problem posted in here). They overheat & start to degrade & at 1st the problem is intermittent, but as time goes on, they die completely & the bike then runs off the remaining battery power, as the battery drains, you can get things happening like the bike running rough, backfiring & so on. Have it checked out to be sure. you can replace the reg easy enough, but don't replace it with the Honda one, either one from a GSX (I have read that this is an option) or heavy duty unit non OEM.
Make sure the bike is hot when you have the reg checked out, if its cold, it can give a positive (ok) reading.

Thanks Pacemaker!! I was thinking that may be the problem. Now that I think about it I do remember a bunch of threads on it!! GSX, the suzuki right? I'll have to do some research and see!!! So, do you think it was causing a low voltage scenario throughout the system? Which in my world of dragboats, if you have low battery voltage to the MSD they start to act up. Has anyone had it happen (go bad) while it's running? Strange!!!!!

With the reg RS, then there is no or very little voltage being feed through the system from the alt, so its just draining the battery, not enough juice for plugs/fuel pump.
The ones in the link look very similar to the one I replaced, big heat sinks (I always think of Mechwarrior upgrades when I talk heat sinks). Anyway they should do the job nicely.

Yeah, my regulator went out while I was on my way to school. I was at a red light and when it went green and I started to go, the bike just died. I thought I let the clutch out funny and stalled it, but it wouldn't restart and push starting wouldn't work either. The funny thing is, the bike ran perfectly until that afternoon.

I replaced the regulator, re-charged the battery and haven't had a problem with it since.

I had one fail a few years back on my CBR600 F1 Hurricane and the tach needle would bounce around radically when the VR/R was dying.

The bike ran fine but the tach needle would bounce, this was the first warning sign, we turned around and headed for the garage.

I was 30 miles from home with my wife on back when it started to go.

Every stop light I kept that puppy pegged and the closer I got to the garage the worse it ran.

It was dark out and the headlight started to go a few blocks from home, I pulled into the drive hit the garage opener and I had no headlight when I pulled in the garage, shut the bike off and it was dead as a door nail. no horn no lights no nothing, dead.

Yeah that sounds like the regulator, when I first got my bike it used to die one me everytime I came home and it sat and got cold for a quick minute it would never start back up until the next day. Then the same thing all over again. The Honda shop thought it was the battery and made me pitch $60 for anew one until it cut off 30 minutes after I drove it home from the shop. I brought it back and a week later they finally found out it was the regulator not feeding enuff juice to keep it running. They replaced it an I haven't had no probs since.
