Many people have strong feelings on what brand or material they're made out of. I don't think that for the average rider, particularly a college student using for transportation it really matters. "X" ring technology, which is just a fancy "O" ring with the cross-sectional profile of an X as opposed to a circle is going to have the best life. Most chain manufacturers are going to be fine. As for sprockets, Steel is going to last longer, and aluminum is lighter, but wears faster. Here's a couple of web sites to look at, which also helps explain some of the different technologies.

For what it's worth, I'm using AFAM sprockets (steel) and EK Chains on my F3 as well as my 1000F

Hey, I just replaced my chain and sprockets as a poor college student as well. Kept it stock and with a 20k mile warranty I am happy. This is what I bought, a complete set, comes with the stock gearing and a gold X-ring chain with riveting master link. The price has gone up since last month, I paid only $149.24 with shipping.

I run RK X ring and vortek sprockets. I picked up a 520 convt kit on ebay for I think 160.00 at the door.
