Default WTF is this!?!?!

The bike is down for some TLC and a tune up and when removing the front sprocket cover I found this mess!! It looks like metal shavings mixed in with the chain grease but why the metal shavings?
They can only be coming from the sprocket but is there an underlying problem to this symptom?

metal on metal is going to wear regardless of lubrication....thats a lot of f'ing build up...looks like chain lube obviously and some metal shavings like you said, oh and to let you know...i had my sprocket cover off earlier this week and it did NOT look like that...

Yea I figured...I know there will be some metal deposits but this is too much.

Plus, I found a little play in the sprocket even though the bolt is tight.

How difficult is it to replace the front sprocket?

Not very, put it in a higher gear than first, but a socket on there with a breaker bar and the bolt will come out. Then pull the old sprocket off, slide the new one on, replace the bolt and torque it to spec.

That sprocket should not be wobbling or moving at all. Hopefully just the sprocket is where the shavings came from and not the output shaft.

Well I'll give it a shot...anyone know a good place to find a -1 sprocket. I'm assuming my bike is still the stock 530 chain.

When i went to the shop the other day i got to sit and watch my bike get worked on from maybe 2-3 feet away, put it in first gear..and take an impact to it...mine was stuck on there good and a breaker bar turned the engine over!! and there should be any movement like others have stated. i have a 525 setup on my f2 because they had plenty of f3 sprockets but no f2 ones...

That sprocket looks hooped anyways, best off with a new one...

When you get the sprocket off, check behind the sprocket and everything around it, and look along the chain lines to see if anything is being chewed up.

Got the sprocket off and everything looks good at a quick glance. It is a 14T and I'm thinking about going to a 13T since the rear is the stock 43T. This acceptable?

Also, anyone care to throw up some links to motorcycle parts sites I can purchase a sprocket from?
