Default What could be wrong?

This all started late last riding season. Every now and then my bike would start bogging down past 1/4 throttle. I would stop the bike and shake it and it would run just fine. I thought it was something clogging the fuel system somehow so i cleaned the tank. It ran fine after that for a while and then it started happening again. It was very random. Then one day, It started doing and and didn't stop. Im curious what could be causing this. I am thinking it could be clogged jets but it was weird how it started off and on. Any Ideas?

I would go with the carbs first, pull them off and give them a good cleaning. While they are off, clean out the hose from the tank to the carbs.

The symptoms sound like something floating around in the float bowls. You could try just draining them (messy thing to do) by removing the drain screw from the bottom of the float bowl. Be aware that fuel would come out not only the drain port, but out from where the drain screw is removed from. Fuel would continue to flow while the petcock is turned on and it may take a moment or two before it stops when you shut it off.

Naturally the best thing would be to pull the carbs and clean them out, especially if it's never been done on a 15 or so year old bike.

Thanks everyone! I pulled the carbs and gave them a good cleaning. There was some reddish little clumps in the float bowls. Now I no longer have that problem but something else popped up. When Im driving down the freeway it sometimes starts sounding like its gonna die as if its out of gas. I pulled the choke and it ran fine on. I cleaned the fuel strainer in the tank and made sure the lines were all clear when I pulled the carbs. What else might be able to cause this?

Thanks again for your help!

sounds like the tank breather hoses are clogged or pinched. Mine would do the same thing too. If it starts doing this open the tank and see if it goes away.

Also try using an inline fuel filter, I had rust from the tank get into the carbs and it did the same thing. Clean out the carbs, sounds like the jets are plugging up
