Hello everyone, I'm new to this site. Cool site by the way. I think I may have a timing problem with my 94 cbr f2. My question is can I use a timing light that is made for cars or do I have to buy one that is made for bikes? I have tryed everything with this bike from cleaning the carbs to replacing all of the plugs. All 4 are firing also. Just not sure if they are firing in order.If anyone can help I would be very thankful.

 

Nah, you need a shop manual. You take off the timing mark cover, the clutch cover (to turn the fly wheel) and the valve cover. You align the timing marks on the sprockets with the timing mark. The manual will give precise directions. From the backfiring you posted I would say it might have jumped timing -- shouldn't have done that just because it sat for a year though. I think you got it for $700 because dude before you couldn't fix it.

Thanks for the info man!! I'm going to take it to a shop before I really cause some major damage. I have taken it to a motorcycle shop before, but they tryed to tell me the engine was blow and then offer me $500.00 for it. I do have one question though. If somehow it did jump time what could that mean? Smashed valves? Well, I guess I'll find out soon enough. Take care and thanks again.

 

Cam chain tensioner is the usual culprit for jumping time. Valves should be o.k. unless you broke a retainer (dropped a valve). But it wouldn't turn over without a lot of nasty sounds if that had happened. I wouldn't take it to any mechanic that gave me 'bad' news then offered to buy it for cheap[:@] A shop manual is cheaper than 1 hr of labor ...

 

I've often seen spark plug wires switched on cars, but it also happens on bikes. Unless it's a single. Make sure the wires are numbered 1-4, starting from the left.

 

Hello everyone!! Just wanted to tell you guys what was keeping my 94 600 f2 from starting. It turned out to be crossed plug wires. I couldn't believe it was that simple. I wish I could say I'm riding right now but my starter went out on it. So, if anyone has a starter that they are selling or hear of one around please drop me an email. Thanks guys!!

dude same exact thing happened on mine... i think there is a bad serivce manual out there or something... cause mine was the same way... Although my brother-in law rebuilt my starter and cleaned it so it saved mine....

 

Here's why you need a manual. The Haynes Manual lists 10 things to check when the starter won't rotate, before checking the actual starter. I'll list the first five. After you check them and it still doesn't turn I'll list the next five. You'll need your trusty volt meter.

Engine stop switch off. Main fuse blown. Battery low. Neutral gear not selected. Faulty neutral indicator switch, clutch interlock switch or side stand switch.
