the CDI takes a signal from your flywheel and the ignition pickup, and uses that to tell the coils when to fire. its basically your ignition box on the bike.
Take the three bolts out that holds down the gauges and check the connections. About once a year I loose my tach and have to re-connect the connector. It's very simple and takes under 5 min.

I think I mistakenly said the CDI when I meant the ICM (under the seat). You ground the common to the frame and stick the other into the Yellow/Green lead coming out the ICM.
