Default "swimmy" rear end

hey,

anyone know what might cause a feeling of slight slippage of the rear? I go around a mild bend at around 45-50 mph and feel the rear sort of slip. It doesn't really loose traction or move from the pavement, just kind of feels a bit loose. I checked tire pressure and all the fasteners. there seems to be no play at the bearing.....maybe the f2's just feel this way? maybe it's my tires... they're new with 300 miles

any ideas
Thx

How is your suspension setup? Have you set the bike for your weight and adjusted rebound all around? If your preload and rebound settings are way off, this could cause you to "swim" through turns.

Yeah, adjust preload to provide 30mm (3cm, 1inch) of sag. Then jam on the rear seat, and see how fast it comes back. You want it to return at a slower rate than it compresses, so as it absorbs the bump but then doesn't shoot you off your seat on it's way back, heh.

Tire alignment could cause the issue, along with the suspension setup. Also, crummy old tires will cause this if the rubber has hardened excessively, or if they are just worn down.

I love this forum, thanks

Tires are new Avon Storm Ultra 2 at about 40 psi

The rear shock I adjusted at about setting 3, I weigh 160, maybe this is too weak, I'll try and make it a little stiffer. When I ride it is nice and soft, the roads here are crap. I can see how this might cause problems

I'll check alignment as well, can't find anything dealing directly with this in either the service manual or clymers though. I think it's making sure that the axle is straight through the swingarm and that both nuts are in the same position

Prettty much. You've got the tick marks on the tensioner. Make sure they're in the same place on both sides.

40 PSI is also pretty high. 36 is a bit more what you're looking for, and you can go as low as 30-32 for espescially improved traction.

all personal preference. With my pilot powers I prefer a higher pressure (42 psi) on the street. My buddies who race say they drop the track pressure down in the 30's for the biggest contact patch.

tires are new, maybe that's something- only 300 mi. on them

well see what happens in a few minutes

Oh duhhhh! You have brand new tires!

You have to scrub in new tires. The tires exteriors are slick when brand new to help them break free of the molds. The slick exterior takes a bit to wear off, generally 100 miles for most street riders, or so I am told.

they do have 300 mi., the slick stuff is almost gone, maybe I leaned where there was some left. the turns were not that sharp really

I took the rear rear shock from setting 2 to 4. felt better, I may go to 5 now. stiffer, a bit more responsive.

have to figure out why it hesitates and jumps a bit a 5k now. trying the carb cleaner in the tank right now. what's the most effective?

Thank for all the help
