Default Steering question

Hey guys, just picked a 94 cbr 600f2, with 24k, nice looking and running bike. However when i brake i can feel the front end almost clunking, like the handlebars are moving very slightly. I can hear a clunking too. Is this possibly the bearings or something more serious?

Check the steering head and make sure it is properly tightend. It could also be the rotors/pads. Some race rotors/pads clunk when you hit the brakes as they are VERY free floating. Not likely in this case, but it's possible.

+1 on the steering head bearings.

Once you get them checked, lift up the front-end and make sure the bars move side to side smoothly. Sometimes, with really worn steering head bearings, the clunk you hear will turn into something like a flat-spot in the steering travel.

Lift the front wheel off the ground and try to pull the front forks upwards, toward you if you're straddling the front tire.. If it moves at all, you need to adjust the adjustment nut below the upper triple clamp. While you got the wheel off the ground, move the tire to full steering lock, either direction and try to "twist" the tire. If the wheel moves independently of the front forks (wheel moves without forks moving), you need new wheel bearings. Also check to make sure the brake calipers and rotors are tightened to spec. The bolts can back themselves out over time, especially after 24,000 miles.

+1 on wheel bearings, though this should be noticeable when you tip into a corner too.
