Speedometer wont work

For some reason it has stopped working. The bike was dropped a few days ago but it was still working after. I havent had time to look but are there any ideas as to why it would stop working? My RPM gauge is still working fine and all lights are also working. My temp gauge broke before i even got the bike but i think its just the wiring to the sesor that is broke for the temp gauge. I just wanna know why the speed one is busted?

Thank you :)

Check that the cable hasn't been dinged. If it isn't noticeably dinged, make sure it's connection to the axle assembly is snug.

If all that visually appears kosher, disconnect the cable from the axle assembly. Attach a power drill to the cable and run the drill. If the speedo moves, your axle assembly is toast. If your speedo doesn't move, remove the cable all the way, and spin one side and see if the other side spins. If it does spin, your gauge is toast. If it doesn't spin, your cable is bad.

+1 Just tested a speedometer/cable this way. That'll set you straight.

Are F3s the only one with a speedometer. Im looking in my service manuel and it only shows a tachometer and coolant gauge for the F2. But the california edition F3 shows a tach, speed and coolant gauge. Just curious?:icon_shrug:

Ahhhh... F3's have an electronic speedo, correct? That could be why. It is showing you all the gauges that aren't purely mechanical...

Yeah F2's have a speedo gauge, it's just not electronic. It's fed off the axle.

I just tested my cable and it worked fine. When i took it off, the metal tooth that spins the cable fell out. So ima guess i need a new axle assembly. :icon_no:

Just found some on ebay. Only 20 bucks. As far as getting it on there im thinking i gotta take the wheel off the fork huh?

jnicola 01-14-2010 01:32 PM

Yeah loosen the axle, remove it.drop the wheel. Speed assembling is on the axle but plugs into the rim and locks into place against the fork. This is all presuming i recall correctly :)

Swap out the speedo assembly and off you go.
