Default Speedo quit working

The weather here has been crazy so I decided to take the bike out for a little ride. The speedo quit working. When I got home I pulled the cable out of the bottom where it goes into the wheel. I stuck a small screwdriver in there to see if the cable was connected at the gauge and the needle moved. I then got the front tire off the ground and spun it and the piece that the cable goes over was also turning.

Is it possible the gears inside the wheel are bad even if it looks like it should be working?

Thanks,

Chris

try hooking the cable back up and spin the wheel and see if it works. if not maybe the cable went bad or something or got stuck.

Yeah I tried that while I had the front tire off the ground and it still didnt work. I guess I will pull the front tire off and take a look at the mechanism.

I dont believe there are gears, I believe it is a plastic piece that sorta rides against the front wheel. Check that..

hook a drill up to the cable where it goes into the tire and see if the speedo works. if it does then something is wrong it the tire.

I hooked up a drill to it tonight and the speedo works so I know it must be in the wheel somewhere.

The speedo mechanism is sofaking simple. when you take the gear housing off(which has like...1 gear in it, you will see a metal ring with TWO tabs on it resting up against the bearings on the right(facing the bike head on) side of the wheel(left if your facing the same direction as the bike) that turns a little gear like thing in the gear housing...and from there it spins the speedo cable(which still works)....so....easy troubleshooting...make sure those tabs aren't bent inward too much....mine where from using it to hammer the bearings back in(whoops lol)
