Default Problems!! help!!! HERSH!?!?!

Ok, heres my prob....i have had some issues with the bike starting since i bought it...when i start it and dont warm it up all the way the bike stalls out(what i mean is choke on, fire it up...let it run for a few secs....give it sum throttle to bump the rpms up and then turn the choke off keep the rpms up till sumwhat warm).......sometimes it wont allow me to warm it up all the way before dyingthen it wont crank...like its flooded...put new plugs in late fall...was runnin fine for awhile...took it out of storage after winter...fired right up rode it for awhile...Then started the issue of not staying on or starting cold...btw only an issue when cold starting, once at running temp the bike fires and runs fine.....So im thinking this is a dirty carb issue...so i just took it to a shop down the street had them clean carbs, sync, new plugs again, oil change...got it back yesterday...RAN GREAT!!!! Went to start it this morning all was fine...took off and got about a mile down the road and started to sputter, so i shifted to 2nd to keep the rpms up and then eventually sputtered to stop and wouldnt start...just had the guy who just worked on it pick it up and he stuck a spark plug in one of the wires and tried to start it and saw little to no spark....he thinks its an issue of a bad ecu.....can i get a second opinion on all of this...cuz i am frustrated as all hell....Thanks guys!

first of all, our bikes do not have an ECU. we have carburetor bikes, not fuel injected bikes. second, are you sure he cleaned the carbs? He might have just poured some carb cleaner in them and told you all was ok. Next, if you have little to no spark, check your ignition coils. Hope you have a manual and a multimeter. Good luck

ok...well he called it a "spark box"....its the component on the right side near the taillight, i just assumed it was an ecu..looked up f2 ecu on ebay and got a few...so just an assumption.....he has had an f2 for over 10 years and knows the bikes inside and out..but the carbs not getting cleaned was my first thought...but its back in there now..so hopefully its figured out...he said its prolly either that "spark box" or my coils..but he didnt think it would b the coils

i would assume he's referring to the rectifier?

edit: correction, that big *** ignitor box is what you're referring to. my bad. From my knowledge those things rarely go bad. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. In the manual, it says you cannot test that either. I would say start with the coils, something easy to test. Hope that helps!

Hersh will chime in here any time now :-P

Hersh chiming in:

Sounds like you're jetted too rich, pull your plugs and check the color. If they're black and fluffy you are over jetted.

You need to find out what size jets you have now. Do you know if your bike has a jet kit in it?

You swap out the brass "jets" in the carburetors for a smaller size, and you can shim the needle up or down, and the adjustment for mixture at idle is just a screw that you turn in or out.

You need to find out at what point in your throttle range you are running rich, as each jet controls the mixture at a specific point in the throttle opening range.

This is best done by a pro on a dyno, you can get it in the right ball park by checking the plugs and changing jets but it is nearly impossible to get perfect without a dyno machine.

Easiest way would be to contact the previous owner. But if you don't feel like doing that or want to learn something new..... take your carbs apart... ummm lol, ill let Hershey or someone else explain this to you.
