A cam chain is a chain that connects the crankshaft to the camshaft or camshafts (depending on SOHC or DOHC cylinder head arrangements) in the valve train assembly. This chain not only connects the crank to the cam(s) but it also maintains the correct valve timing. Valve timing is critical, to maximize engine performance as well as to prevent severe engine damage. A cam chain requires a certain amount of tension to insure that the chain does not jump a tooth. A cam chain tensioner applies a certain amount of tension on the cam chain or chains (two cam chains in the case of a V-twin) at all times to maintain correct camshaft/valve timing. Conventional cam chain tension adjusters require periodic adjustment to maintain proper tension as the cam chain wears. An automatic style cam chain tensioner does not require periodic adjustment since the tension is adjusted by spring or oil pressure. The benefit is auto adjustment, reduced cam chain wear and reduced mechanical engine noise.

Found the above by googling "cam chain tensioner"

Ya buy a CCT it was well worth the money for me, and it is an easy install. And eventually your automatic cct will probably go out, as mine did, so this way you save yourself the trouble later on.

Well what goes bad in the f2, the cam chain tensioner or the adjuster? In the diagram it has both? I ordered the factory automatic tensioner for mine, was that right??????

You need #5 on the diagram.14550-MV9-671

Number #3 is the same thing, actually the old part number. No longer, been replaced by the above number.

I just put in my Manual CCT. Got one on ebay for like $40.00. It wasn't too hard to figure out, it was just hard to get to the damn thing. Had to take off my faring and shift up my gas tank. Pain in the ***.

I posted a thread with pics on how to do this in the How-To forum. Go check it out or PM me with questions.
Why did you remove your gas tank? I didn't even have to touch mine.
